Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Trebinje is Bosnia and Herzegovina's southernmost city, with a Mediterranean climate and a character distinct from the rest of the country. The old town of Kastel preserves Ottoman-era stone walls and a mosque, while the 18th-century Arslanagic Bridge — a relocated Ottoman bridge — spans the river. The Hercegovacka Gracanica monastery, a replica of the medieval Kosovo original, crowns the hill above town. Plane trees shade the main square, and local wines from the Herzegovina karst are gaining international recognition.

Trebinje is a 30-minute drive from Dubrovnik, making it an easy day trip. The Saturday morning market under the plane trees is the liveliest event of the week. Try local wines from Vukoje or Tvrdos.
April through October. Summer is hot but the riverside location provides some relief. The Trebinje Summer Festival in July and August brings outdoor concerts and theater.
