Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Banja Luka is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the capital of Republika Srpska. The city sits on the emerald-green Vrbas River, which cuts a dramatic canyon just upstream. Kastel Fortress, with Roman foundations and Ottoman walls, overlooks the river. The Ferhadija Mosque, destroyed in 1993 and meticulously rebuilt, is a symbol of post-war reconciliation.

Vrbas rafting is the highlight — operators run from May through September. The fortress and mosque are walking distance from the center. Banja Luka has an excellent cafe culture.
May through September for rafting and warm weather. Spring and autumn are lovely for walking.
