Why Visit Odda
Odda sits at the head of Sorfjorden, a branch of Hardangerfjord, and serves as the primary base for hiking to Trolltunga (Troll's Tongue). This horizontal rock formation juts out 2,300 feet above the turquoise Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The hike is one of Norway's most iconic, covering 17 miles round trip with 2,600 feet of elevation gain. The surrounding Hardangervidda plateau is the largest mountain plateau in northern Europe.

Entrance Fee
No town entrance fee. Trolltunga parking at Skjeggedal (P2, 450 m) and Mågelitopp (P3, 1,250 m) is paid: P2 around 600 NOK/day, P3 around 600 NOK plus a separate toll road fee; pre-book in summer.
Getting There
By car about 3.5 hours from Bergen via E16/Rv7/Rv13 (around 160 km) including the Hardanger Bridge. Skånevik/Jondal ferries shorten some routes. Bus 930/990 (Skyss/Kringom) connects Odda with Bergen and Voss; nearest train is Voss on the Bergen Line, then bus. Trolltunga trailhead at Skjeggedal is about 13 km from Odda town.
Where to Stay
Odda town has Hardangerfjord Hotel on the waterfront, Trolltunga Hotel, and Odda Camping. Tyssedal (5 km north) has hotel and hostel options. Closer to the trailhead, Trolltunga Camping and cabins sit near Skjeggedal/Tyssedal. Book ahead June-September.
Best Time
Mid-June to mid-September for snow-free Trolltunga hiking; July-August is busiest and warmest. Outside that window the upper trail can require winter equipment or a guide.
Safety
The top hazard is the Trolltunga hike itself: a long route that is unmarked in winter, with rapid weather changes, snow lingering into June, and no railings at the ledge. Several deaths and many rescues have occurred. Carry layers, food, water, and a headlamp, and confirm the trail is in summer season (roughly mid-June to mid-September) before going without a guide. Cliff edges have no barriers.
