Mont Saint-Michel, France
Mont Saint-Michel rises from the tidal flats like a vision — a granite island crowned by a Gothic abbey that has drawn pilgrims since the 8th century. At high tide, the sea surrounds the island. At low tide, vast sand flats stretch to the horizon. The single street climbs steeply through medieval houses and ramparts to the abbey at the summit, 80 meters above the sea.

Park on the mainland and take the shuttle or walk the 2.5km causeway to the island. Check tide times — the island is most dramatic when surrounded by water.
May through September for long days and mild weather. The highest tides occur during spring and autumn equinoxes.
