Mammoth Cave, United States
Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system on Earth, with over 420 miles of surveyed passageways and new passages still being discovered. The cave was formed over millions of years as mildly acidic water dissolved the limestone bedrock. Above ground, the park preserves 80 miles of trails through old-growth forest along the Green River. Indigenous peoples explored the caves with reed torches over 4,000 years ago.
