Chiang Rai, Thailand
Chiang Rai is smaller and quieter than Chiang Mai, with a laid-back charm and several unique attractions. The Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), a glittering contemporary Buddhist temple covered in mirrors and white plaster, is the creation of artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and is one of Thailand's most extraordinary buildings. The Baan Dam (Black House) museum, created by the late artist Thawan Duchanee, offers a dark counterpoint — a compound of buildings filled with animal horns, bones, and crocodile skins. The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar and Saturday Walking Street Market are excellent for local crafts and northern Thai street food. The Clock Tower in the city center puts on a colorful light show each evening. The surrounding countryside offers visits to tea plantations, hill tribe communities, and the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the Mekong River.
