Why Visit Cappadocia
Cappadocia's otherworldly landscape was formed when volcanic eruptions blanketed the region in ash millions of years ago, which solidified into soft tuff rock and was then sculpted by wind and water into cones, pillars, and 'fairy chimneys.' Humans have carved homes, churches, and entire underground cities into this rock for thousands of years. The Goreme Open-Air Museum preserves Byzantine cave churches with frescoes from the 10th through 12th centuries.

Entrance Fee
The Göreme Open Air Museum charges an entrance fee (around 700 TRY as of 2024-2025; verify the current rate at the gate). The standard Turkish Müzekart is not valid here; foreign visitors need the separate Museum Pass Cappadocia. Walking the valleys (Rose, Red, Love, Pigeon) is free, though small fees apply at some valley chapels. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities charge separate entrance fees.
Getting There
Nearest airports are Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 40 km from Göreme, and Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), about 75 km. Both have shuttle services to Göreme, Ürgüp, and Uçhisar. From Istanbul it is roughly a 1.5-hour flight, or about a 10-hour overnight bus to the Nevşehir/Göreme otogar. Within the region, dolmuş minibuses connect Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos, and Uçhisar; renting a car or scooter is common for reaching Ihlara Valley and the underground cities.
Where to Stay
Göreme is the main base, with cave hotels and budget options walkable to most valleys and balloon launch sites. Uçhisar has higher-end cave hotels with valley views. Ürgüp is a larger town with hotels, restaurants, and wineries. Avanos sits on the Kızılırmak (Red River) and is known for pottery. Book balloon flights and cave rooms well ahead in peak season (April-June, September-October).
Best Time
Best months are April-June and September-October for mild temperatures and reliable balloon flights. July-August is hot and crowded; winter (December-February) brings snow that coats the fairy chimneys but more frequent balloon cancellations.
Safety
The top hazard is hot-air balloon flights: flights are weather-dependent and cancelled in high wind, and there have been fatal and injury accidents in past years - book a licensed operator and accept cancellations. On the trails, the soft tuff and unfenced cliff edges at valley viewpoints are a fall risk; stay back from rims, especially in sunset crowds. Carry water and sun protection - summer temperatures exceed 30°C with little shade, while winter brings snow and ice. Underground cities (Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı) have low, narrow passages unsuitable for those with claustrophobia or mobility issues.
