Capitol Reef, United States
Capitol Reef protects a 100-mile-long wrinkle in the Earth's crust called the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline where rock layers have been tilted, folded, and eroded into a landscape of colorful cliffs, domes, and narrow canyons. The park is the least visited of Utah's five national parks, offering solitude among formations that rival any in the state. The historic Fruita district preserves orchards planted by Mormon settlers in the 1880s.

Capitol Reef has no timed entry system and rarely feels crowded. The Fruita orchards are pick-your-own when fruit is ripe — check at the visitor center.
March through May and September through November. Flash flood season runs July through September — avoid narrow canyons during storms.
