Annecy, France
Annecy is absurdly beautiful. The old town is a network of cobblestone streets and canals flowing from Lake Annecy, one of Europe's cleanest lakes. The Palais de l'Isle, a 12th-century prison on a tiny island in the middle of the Thiou canal, is the town's most photographed landmark. The lakeside Jardins de l'Europe and the Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge) offer views across the turquoise lake to the mountains. The Chateau d'Annecy, perched above the old town, houses a regional museum. The weekly Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday markets fill the streets along the canals with local cheeses, charcuterie, and Savoyard specialties. Beyond the town, the lakeside cycling and walking path stretches for kilometers, and the surrounding mountains offer hiking and paragliding with lake views.
